Amílcar Cabral, after a childhood in Cape Verde, where he witnessed one of the worst times of hunger, graduating in Lisbon, the Agronomy Institute of the Instituto Superior Técnico, and returning to Guinea, where he was born, had the opportunity to witness the suffering of farmers under colonial rule.
He was one of the founders of the clandestine African Party for The Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC). He died in 1973, murdered by members of his own party. But he was always remembered as one of the great drivers of the independence of Cape Verde and Guinea.
