The Alexandre Albuquerque Square is simple, but special at the same time. The bust of the former governor stands in the center of it, giving it its name.

The square is located on the Plateau. It is close to several points of interest, such as museums(ethnographic), or old buildings from the 18th and 20th centuries. It is surrounded by XIX and XX centuries old buildings, including the Church of Nossa Senhora da Graça, the City Hall and the Palace of Justice, among other important buildings of Santiago Island. Near the square there are cafes (one being inside the square), supermarkets, restaurants and hotels.

Alexandre Albuquerque Square – In honor of the Colonial Governor

Alexandre Albuquerque was a governor of Cape Verde during colonial times, between 1869 and 1876, and was honored by changing the name of the square, previously called Praça do Pelourinho, to his, and with this statue. At the same place there is a similar monument dedicated to Serpa Pinto, another governor from colonial times.
