Lighthouse of Maria Pia (Ponta Temerosa)

A bit of history

Located in Ponta Temerosa, and near the Port of The City of Praia, this lighthouse dating from 1981, is located in an old building, with Portuguese influence. So, when you visit the lighthouse, you are discovering some of the historic buildings in Praia City.

When you have the opportunity to climb the wooden spiral staircase and observe the view, the D. Maria Pia Lighthouse becomes even more fantastic. It is possible, on the one hand, to contemplate the sea, and on the other have a view over the Bay, prainha, and part of the Beach City. And an opportunity to watch the sunset while the wind touches our faces at the southernmost point of the island of Santiago in Cape Verde.

The D. Maria Pia lighthouse is located about 1 km from the Pope’s Cross – a monument in honor of John Paul II in Cape Verde – and the walk between the two points is interesting if you want to walk a bit. The lighthouse is in degraded condition and is being renovated in order to rehabilitate and preserve one of the emblematic monuments of the city of Praia. A visit that is worth it, especially if the lighthouse keeper is available to take you to the top of the Lighthouse.
