The Monte Gordo

Monte Gordo is a 1,312-meter-high (3,312-feet) elevation, the highest point on the island of São Nicolau, in Cape Verde. Mountaineers visit the hill, because it’s a whole experience: small villages, wonderful nature landscapes, and a path that turns out to be relatively simple to do, relatively close to Ribeira Brava.

When you visit this mountain, you will have the opportunity to see the natural park of Monte Gordo. This park that surrounds the top of the mountain and its surrounding area, has pine trees, eucalyptus and other species that allow the visitor to walk through the forest. Home to endemic plant and animal species, some of them endangered, it became imperative to classify this natural park as a protected area, covering part of the areas of Ribeira Grande and Tarrafal, which are located 5 km and 4 km from this hill, respectively. Besides the fauna and flora, this hill is rich geologically and morphologically, preserving, and making it possible to know, in part, the original ecosystem of the island.

This special place, given the wonderful characteristics of its terrain, can be perfect for adventure activities, such as mountain biking, trekking, or horseback riding. The important thing is, whatever the activity developed, to have the maximum respect for nature, and to guarantee the low impact of its actions.
