The beach at Ponta da Salina, on Fogo Island, Cape Verde

Ponta da Salina beach has the characteristics of a typical beach of the islands located in the western part of the African continent: black sand, of volcanic origin, protected by the surrounding rocks.

If many visitors to the island have as their main goal to visit the volcano and its peak, they end up being surprised by something wonderful like Salina Beach.

In economic terms it is important, as it is a fishing area, one of the livelihoods of the island’s inhabitants.

The rock formations of Ponta da Salina

One of the admirable aspects of Ponta da Salina are its monuments: who was responsible for building, for example, the bridge that stands there?

In fact, it was a set of events that led to the formation of these rocks. The lava, in one of the volcano’s eruptions thousands of years ago, flowed into the sea, forming a rock complex. With time and erosion (salt water blowing, winds) the bridge has gained its shape, as have the other rock formations there.

Salina Bridge has thus become a wonderful place where we can observe nature like an engineer or architect. Visit it, when choosing what to visit on Fogo Island, and you won’t regret it.
