A demanding and wonderful walk
When preparing to hike to the top of the Crown, which is almost 2000m high, you should take into consideration that the place is inhospitable, and know where the car should leave you. It is also a good idea to have orientation forms with you so that you don’t get lost. It is one of the places to visit in Santo Antão, just like the Paul Valley and its cave.
It is important to have a 4×4 if you are driving. And don’t forget to bring water, food, have a means of orientation, and be contactable in case any help is needed.
Tarrafal – Monte Trigo and Topo da Coroa
Tarrafal is the place that has road access, to Monte Trigo, previously only reachable by boat or dirt track. It is a beautiful road, surrounded by desert landscapes, with inactive volcanoes and with wonderful, stunning colors.
Monte Trigo, on the other hand, is a simple place with an affable fishing community, with a magnificent coastline and tasty yams.
Getting to Monte Trigo is an adventure, despite the modern road. But it is a worthwhile adventure. Topo da Coroa is 4 km from Monte Trigo and 20 km from Porto Novo.
Climb to the Top of the Crown
Topo da Coroa was once a large volcano, which is now inactive. The trip between Monte Trigo, at the foot of the Volcano, and the top of the Crown, with return to Monte Trigo, takes about 6 hours of walking.
With a viewpoint and the possibility of feeling, on certain days, above the clouds, it is a wonderful experience.
Enjoy a magnificent ascent and descent, all the way to the coast. Passionate, it is a worthwhile trip in Santo Antão.
