The statue of a Cape Verdean woman
Created in the year 2000, by initiative of two Cape Verdean women residents of the NetherlandsThe statue of the Cape Verdean woman is, today, an important landmark for those who visit the country, and helps to understand the culture of a people where women have and had a fundamental role over time, in various social areas.
Depicting a woman with a scarf on her head, often used for hair protection, a child in front, in the role of mother/caretaker, and a mortar and pestle, an important domestic utensil in Cape Verdean culture, the statue is located in a fantastic viewpoint overlooking the sea.
With the inscription at the base “And so that it may always be remembered on this piece of ground and rock, this noble figure beloved by us: O woman of the lands of Cape Verde.” This statue carries sentiment and gratitude.
Mê Maia was the name affectionately given to the statue by the locals, meaning “Mayan Mother”. A place not to be missed if you visit the island of Santo Antão.
